Well, crap
« on: November 19, 2017, 08:05:56 AM »
I know I have not been coming here to the site as much as I should lately.

On Sept. 30 Dad took a tumble and fortunately did not break anything, just sore and bruised. Dad seemed to get over the fall, albeit slowly, he is 90 after all. I got him in and out to see his Doc several times and things seemed to be going well.

Dad had a mole that started bleeding so I took him in and Doc removed it and sampled one next to it. The first spot they had to go in and remove tissue. And Dad healed up from that.

Fast forward to Oct. 25 and Dad was feeling rougher than normal, mostly complaining of having some diarrhea. So off to the Doc again. Doc had a bunch of tests done, CT, blood, EKG, and urine. Said they would call with results. Late afternoon, Dad calls and said Doc wanted him in the hospital that night. I call the clinic and was told it was not an emergency but preferred to have Dad in that evening. I happen to be finishing up wheat planting at this point and not much left so I finish up, get home and feed Dad some supper and then head to the hospital.

So Dad is in 3 or 4 days and then switch him over to swing bed. Paper work changes but not the room. First off, Doc was worried about  Dad's heart enzymes being elevated, thinking was heart attack or stroke. Figured out that it was a slow heart beat, clear down to 30 BPM so Doc took him off the beta blocker and resolved that issue. The diarrhea issue has not improved and Doc did a stool study and results came back negative. Finally Doc started trying different antidiarrheals but so far nothing has slowed it down. I think Doc plans to do a colonoscopy next.

Now we are up to Nov. 16 and Dad has to have surgery on the second mole site to remove the cancer that was found there from the earlier biopsy. That same afternoon, they transferred Dad into Long Term Care. So I spent the rest of the day with the admitting director filling out paperwork and doing an inventory of Dad's possessions.

The next day I took Dad's lift chair and a few other items in to his room. Now I have more paperwork as I need to file a claim with Dad's LTC insurance company plus my sisters and I decided to meet with an elder care lawyer to see if we can protect an of Dad's assets. So now more paperwork from the lawyer.

It has been a shock in seeing Dad go from being semi-independent to darn near invalid. Add onto that the stress involved in this and now the paperwork has worn me to a frazzle.

Thanks for letting me sort of ramble on here.

Welcome Back and Good Luck to you and your Dad.
I just came through that same scenario with my wife.
Unfortunately it did not end well . . . . . She didn't make it to coming home.
I wish you well . . . . . .

Thanks NorCalChuck.

I don't know if Dad will make it back home at this point or not. As one of our members says time will tell.

Flyover, sorry for your dad's run of bad luck. Said a prayer for him this morning.

Chuck, sorry for your great loss. Included you in my prayer also.

Getting on in years is not for sissies. I know that sounds tripe, but I am experiencing some of that myself. Going for knee surgery, if my cardiologist will release me for the surgery. both knees are shot.  Go to see the cartiologist on Dec 5. Knee surgery is set for Mar 5th. got to get my sugar levels down also.
