That would work just fine in China maybe. I don't think even Russia is that socialist anymore.

And THAT my friends, is right out of the communist playbook. They don't even attempt to hide it any more!

As far as the communists are concerned, you are merely the temporary guardian of your children for the convenience of the state.

From my "For what it's worth" file...

I’ve heard the phrase "It takes a whole village to raise a child?" several times over the years, and when I saw the video it brought back memories of when I was a teenager growing up in a small town in Michigan.  All of us knew if we were seen or got caught doing something that wasn’t right our parents would eventually hear of it from one of the other parents.  That was when I first remember hearing it.  Because we lived in an area that was home to a great number of Native Americans it was colloquially attributed to them.

I couldn’t leave it alone so did some digging.  Result of an hour’s digging were that no one seems to know the source.

Excerpts from my cursory search:

‘The Soul Would Have No Rainbow if the Eyes Had No Tears' (Simon & Shuster, 1994), a book of Native American proverbs, attributes the quote to the Omahas, a Siouan-speaking tribe from Nebraska

…folk usage, at least, sees it as African

…couldn't find a reference before 1976 in Chicago

…Cornell West states in one of his stump speeches that it is an old Ethiopian proverb.

…a reasonable and profound statement about collective social responsibility, but perhaps not traceable to a specific origin...

Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton were mentioned as being involved in its usage.

There.  All that said we/I don’t know any more now than we/I did before I submitted this, and I'm another hour older... :-\

I wonder what the pioneers did, all alone out there on the Western Plains without a village.

It cannot be doubted that it helps to have a village of other parents around your family, while you are raising your children. Everybody in the village becomes every child's surrogate parent.

But still, you don't actually need a village around you, to raise a child.
And even if you agree that "it takes a village to raise a child," that does not mean that you must cede the raising of your child to the "wisdom of the village."

The whole concept gives rise to myriad false syllogisms, not least of which is that voiced by Ms. Harris-Perry in her ultimately silly stand-up piece.

I totally agree Steve.

That said, my sons were raised in  the "military environment" surrounding them while I served. While none of us ceded our parental responsibility to the group, it was easy to see the effect the group.  When in the states, all the kids from military families went to the local civilian schools. There  was a marked difference between military and non-military kids, at least as far as both the school and civilian parents were concerned.  Had one very liberal male teacher actually kick my older son because he couldn't stand my sons views.  That was, as you can imagine, an interesting situation.

I did come away thinking the "military environment" markedly highlighted the difference between the kids.

Tom, it is instructive to focus upon the fact that a Liberal teacher kicked your son because he disagreed with your son's point-of-view.
How Liberal, or even how liberal, was that teacher? Or, for that matter, how Progressive, or maybe even progressive, was he?

It seems extremely illiberal to be incensed by someone's differing views. It seems downright unconstitutional, to punish him physically for holding them.
I suppose that the, um, Liberal teacher was all for gun control, too, since he seems to have poor control over his impulses, and he would need some external agency to restrain him.

He was the de facto head of a clique of very Progressive (Liberal-Anti-Gun-Anti Military) teachers who were frustrated by the conservative intransigence of "those darned military kids".

One of our Legal Officers prepared a suit to be filed against the teacher and school.  With that and figures showing that the military families financial contribution supporting the school was almost 80% of the school's operating budget, a group of us forced a special School Board Meeting to deal with it.  The teacher was released, the Principal had a "conversion", and the school climate was changed to one supporting, even appreciating, our kids contributions.  Ultimately, no suit was filed, and no further action was needed or taken.  It actually turned out to be a darned good school our kids enjoyed.

See we can make a difference around us...

We can, we should, and we do; all of us.  Some do through direct action, some do just by being - and intentional or not - doing nothing - unintended consequences.  No man is an island...

You know it really is a lie with just enough truth to scrape by legally (not even close morally).

The "village" is people (not government) working with people. How many of us dreaded the words "Do I have to call your parents about this?" when we were growing up? But that was between the person (often a friend's parent) speaking and our own parents, not some government system.

+1 Amen!  If I did it my old man knew about it before he got home.  Sucked!  One BIG disadvantage of living in a small, "small town".

And it works because of the judgement and discretion of the people involved. Those same adults would teach you how to change a tire on your bike or tell you a story about life in years previous, usually with a moral to it. They also helped us learn by gently pointing out the flaws in our glorious plans to "Go over there and try doing this" (usually some place out of the way and something not very smart, likely even dangerous). There was trust and that is what builds a community. And we learned from our elders who had so much to pass on to us.

None of that is what regulation and government overreach are about, they are about indoctrination & control.

Big brother to the rescue!
He will tell you how to do it, and fine you for not doing it his way.
or just take your kid and give them to some one else and pay to have them cared for, after all a parent can't possibly know how to raise their kids with out government intervention.
