MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WPDE) - The City of Myrtle Beach is taking the lead in banning high powered green lasers after Horry County Council tabled an ordinance earlier this month. At a League of Cities meeting with mayors across the county, city officials talked about plans to create their own regulations.

{so if you want one and live in SC, get them while you can...}

There have been cases where pilots have been hit with them. Temporary blindness, low altitude flight, probably not a good combination. Both planes and helicopters have been hit.
Green lasers have longer reach and may not be as eye-safe as reds are even with the regulations in place for such things. Not to say I agree with the proposal. That is a typical over-reaction by people that don't understand things.

The last line of the article says "Myrtle Beach is number one in the country for reports of green lasers being pointed at aircraft." What is it with Myrtle Beach that would make this true?

Seems to me that Myrtle Beach is a party town with the U and college kids...maybe that's how they get their kicks other than getting drunk...

I'm guessing it's also because pilots and aircrew don't have clearance to engage any such threat to aircraft and passenger safety with on-board weapons...
