We're Under Attack
« on: July 29, 2019, 01:57:53 PM »
We're getting a batch of Russian "members," all with addresses related to the "Dark Web."

They're easy to spot, because they give phony locations and list phony interests. One example listed his location as Washington, DC...but in Panama.

So far, none of them has done anything pernicious. But that wasn't true in the recent past. And an attack is an attack, especially since we don't know where this is going.
Please do not approve of these new "memberships."

Just ignore and do not reply.
A reply is a sure way to give them an acknowledgement.
Believe me that anything you say will be an encouragement.

Sorry, guys...
I'm merely marking all of them "banned," so they can't post here.

No RPGs, no Kalashnikovs, no Tokarevs.
It's all very peaceful...and annoying.

Dang it! I watched a Chuck Norris movie last night and was feeling kind of tough today. OK boys, load up, everything back on the truck! Move out!

With the idea that the board is under attack, how much of what is said in the member area is visible to visitors?

Our day-to-day posts are visible to visitors, I suppose, much like on other, similar sites.
But the "attack" to which I referred has to do with people—mostly Russians, I believe—trying to post inappropriate advertising in inappropriate places on this site.

Some of the advertising is in Russian (some of which I can read), and some in English.
Most of it deals with medications like contraband Viagra, as well as other sexually-oriented materials.
Some of it advertises dating sites.
And some of it may advertise illegal forms of pornography.

If I see one posted, I delete it, as I know that it is not coming from any of our 'real' members.

If any of these posts are coming from our 'real' members, and you are reading this, your posts will be deleted regardless of race, color, creed, religion, or personal preferences for bath soap, of which I doubt you use.

Someone, perhaps you, is admitting new members who are Russian (or other) phonies.

Look carefully at the ISP of the person requesting membership. If it ends in ".xyz" or has ".ru" in it, or "onion," do not accept the membership, and ban the attempted user. Look also at the "hobbies" line, and compare the application's location with reality (for instance, Topeka is not in Kenya).

Those are the bad ones.

I do not approve new members; I only get notified when they are admitted and when I receive a "A new member has joined" alert.

If I see a post by a supposed "new member" that is out of line with our "normal" postings (for example; advertisements, other web sites, etc.), I delete them.

Good!

But someone is indiscriminately allowing new members to join, without paying attention to the details.

I'm glad it's not you.
