What most 21st Century Americans simply do not grasp is that the Constitution and Bill of Rights were not written to to give rights to the citizens of our then-new nation, but was instead written to tightly constrain the federal government.

Shucks...the guy behind us is my worst nightmare NOW!  I can just imagine how it would be in an emergency!

Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight, and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be.  One hundred percent and then some.

The essay, and the Twilight Zone episode that it references, are spot-on.

People who take responsibility for themselves seem paranoid and strange...until the stuff hits the fan.
Then, they become selfish and wrong because they won't sacrifice themselves for the well-being of their completely-unprepared neighbors.

It's basically what's wrong with our society today, maybe even more so than when the Twilight Zone episode aired. Think of the people who are sucking at the government teat right now, and what would happen if the dole were to be cut off.

I remember that episode of The Twilight Zone.

The more I learn about humans, the more I like our doggies.

To paraphrase one of the trainers, Be polite and courteous to everyone you meet and have a secret plan to kill them.
